The Challenge to MOND from Ultra-faint Dwarf Galaxies

چکیده

Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) at low acceleration has been astonishingly powerful explaining the flat rotation curve of galaxies and relation between baryonic content their observed circular velocity, known as Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relationship (BTFR). It is that MOND fails velocity dispersion ultra-faint dwarf (UFDs) with justification UFDs are more prone to tidal disruption in compared cold dark matter model. We show that: (i) ratio internal extremely low, (ii) there no correlation deviation from MOND's prediction a function susceptibility, (iii) recent constraints Gaia proper motion analysis on orbital parameters exacerbates challenge MOND. In particular, data indicates Ursa Major I experiencing infall into Milky Way's halo, its inconsistency 7-$\sigma$ level can not be attributed being an early satellite. Moreover, new DR2 shows Willman have least eccentric orbit all UFDs, 4-$\sigma$ highly previously suggested. Finally, given Tucana III only UFD features, Reticulum II Segue two other potentially they comparable galactocentric distances while showing features. Whether wide binaries inflated remains open question addressed future multi-epoch observations.

Testing MOND with Ultra-Compact Dwarf Galaxies

The properties of the recently discovered Ultra-Compact Dwarf Galaxies (UCDs) show that their internal acceleration of gravity is everywhere above a0, the MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) constant of gravity. MOND therefore makes the strong prediction that no mass discrepancy should be observed for this class of objects. This is confirmed by the few UCDs for which virial masses were derived. ...

Kinematics of Extremely Faint Dwarf Galaxies

Abstract. We present the results of deep, high velocity resolution (∼1.6 kms−1) Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI 21cm observations of extremely faint (MB > −12.5) dwarf irregular galaxies. We find that all of our sample galaxies show systematic large scale velocity gradients, unlike earlier studies which found chaotic velocity fields for such faint galaxies. For some of the sample gala...

Turning the Tides on the Ultra-Faint Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies: Coma Berenices and Ursa Major

We present deep CFHT/MegaCam photometry of the ultra-faint Milky Way satellite galaxies: Coma Berenices (ComBer) and Ursa Major II (UMa II). These data extend to r ∼ 25, corresponding to 3 mag below the mainsequence turn-offs in these galaxies. We robustly calculate a total luminosity of MV = −3.8 ± 0.6 for ComBer and MV = −3.9 ± 0.5 for UMa II, in agreement with previous results and confirming...

Velocity dispersions of dwarf spheroidal galaxies: dark matter versus MOND

We present predictions for the line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles of dwarf spheroidal galaxies and compare them to observations in the case of the Fornax dwarf. The predictions are made in the framework of standard dynamical theory of spherical systems with different velocity distributions. The stars are assumed to be distributed according to Sérsic laws with parameters fitted to observ...

The Formation of Ultra-Compact Dwarf Galaxies

Recent spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the Fornax-Cluster reveal nearly unresolved ‘star-like’ objects with red-shifts appropriate to the Fornax-Cluster. These objects have intrinsic sizes of ≈ 100 pc and absolute B-band magnitudes in the range −14 < MB < −11.5 mag and lower limits for the central surface brightness μB ∼ 23 mag/arcsec 2 (Phillipps et al. 2001), and so appear to consti...
